By around 100 AD, the Romans were using bronze  thimbles, while similar examples appeared in ancient China and other civilizations. These early versions were mainly practical, with little attention given to decoration.

During the Middle Ages, thimbles became increasingly common across Europe. By the 14th century, tailors, embroiderers, and leather workers commonly used brass or bronze versions to protect their fingers during repetitive stitching.

During the 18th and 19th centuries,  thimbles sometimes became gifts, keepsakes, and symbols of status. Some were engraved or made from precious materials, turning ordinary sewing tools into small decorative objects that people valued and collected. Their designs could reflect personal taste and craftsmanship.
